Excellence of proceeding towards the mosque walking for Prayer

Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (Radhiallahu anhu) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said:

Hadith: Merits of Ablution (Wudu)

Uthman bin `Affan (Radhiallahu anhu) reported:

I saw the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) performing Wudu' the way I have just done it and said, "He who performs Wudu' like this, his previous sins will be forgiven and his Salat and walking to the mosque will be considered as supererogatory act of worship.''

[Muslim]

Commentary:
Wudu' is a means of remission of minor sins, provided those sins are not related to the rights of people because they too will not be forgiven without penitence and compensating the aggrieved or the wronged.

To perform Wudu' at home before proceeding to the mosque for Salat is highly meritorious. He who does so, will be purged of minor sins. Then his going to the mosque and performance of Salat there, is a means for gaining further reward.

Hadith: Salah (Prayer) in Islam and expiation of past sins

Uthman bin `Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying:

"When the time for a prescribed Salah is due and a Muslim performs its Wudu' and its acts of bowing and prostration properly, this Salah will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he does not commit major sins, and this applies for ever.''

[Muslim]

Commentary:
This Hadith stresses the importance of performing Salat with all its essential prerequisites, i.e., Wudu' and concentration of mind. Such a Salat will expiate the sins.

Hadith: Excellence of Call To Prayer (Adhan) in Islam

Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

"When you hear the Mu'adhdhin (pronouncing the call to Salat), repeat after him what he says.''

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:
This Hadith also tells us to repeat the words of Adhan when we hear it. But when he says "Hayya `alas-Salah'' or "Hayya `alal-Falah'' we must say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.''

Riyad-us-Saliheen – Hadeeth No.1038

Hadith: The Excellence of Adhan (call to prayer)

Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying:

"When you hear the Adhan, repeat what the Mu'adhdhin says. Then ask Allah to exalt my mention because everyone who does so will receive in return ten rewards from Allah. Then beseech Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, which is a high rank in Jannah, fitting for only one of Allah's slaves; and I hope that I will be that man. If any one asks Al-Wasilah for me, it becomes incumbent upon me to intercede for him.''

Visit brother in Faith and pick fresh fruits from Garden of Jannah (Paradise)

Thauban (Radhiallahu anhu) reported:

The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said:

"He who visits his brother in Faith, will remain engaged in picking the fresh fruits from the garden of Jannah till he returns.''

[Muslim]

Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) morning and evening for protection

Uthman bin Affan (Radhiallahu anhu) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said:

"He who recites three times every morning and evening: `Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma`as-mihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa Huwas-Sami`ul-`Alim (In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing),' nothing will harm him.''

[Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

Commentary: The prayer cited in this Hadith means that "I seek the Protection of Allah by means of which one can save himself from every vice, whether it is an animal or man, a jinn or Satan because He is Aware of everyone's condition and Capable of hearing everybody's petition. He who comes in His Protection none can harm him, except that which He wills.''

(Riyad-us-Saliheen - Hadith No. 1457)

Abu Darda (RA): Be a scholar or a learner, or a person who loves or follows scholars

Be a scholar or a learner, or a person who loves [the scholars] or a follower [of the scholars], but do not be the fifth.

Humayd (one of the reporters) asked Al-Hasan (Al-Basri, who reported this from Abû Al-Dardâ`), “And who is the fifth?” He replied, “A heretic (mubtadi’, religious innovator).”

~ Abu Ad-Darda (RA)

Abu Darda (RA): 3 make me laugh and 3 make me cry

Three make me laugh, and three make me cry.

Those that make me laugh are

1) A person who puts his hopes in this worldly life while death pursues him,

2) A person who is heedless [of his Lord] while [his Lord] is not heedless of him, and

3) A person who always laughs while he does not know whether he has pleased Allâh or angered Him.

What makes me cry is

1) Being separated from my beloved: Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his party (the Companions),

2) The horrors of the time of death, and

3) Standing in front of Allâh ‘azza wa jall on the Day when the secrets will be revealed and I do not know will I then go to Paradise or Hell?”

~ Abu Ad-Darda (RA)

Abu Darda (RA) Quote

It is from a person’s knowledge and understanding that he sees to his needs first in order to turn to his prayer with a heart free of distractions.

Abu Darda (RA) Quote: Remember Allah

Remember Allah in good times and He will mention you in hard times.

When you remember those who have passed away, consider yourself like one of them.

And when you think of involving yourself in some worldly matter, consider first what it will lead to in the end.

Did you not see when the man died and his eyes were fixedly open?

He (Abu Huraira, RA) said: Yes.

He (the Holy Prophet ﷺ) said: It is due to the fact that when (the soul leaves the body) his eyesight follows the soul.

Islamic Hadith Quotes - Abdullah Ibn Masud (RA)

Abû ‘Umar Al-Shaybânî reports:

I would sit with Ibn Mas’ûd a whole year without him saying “Allah’s Messenger – Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – said…” When he did actually say “Allah’s Messenger – Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – said…” he would tremble and add, “…or something similar to this” or “words to that effect.”

[Ibn Mas’ûd] was one of those who were very careful and conscientious in the delivery of narrations and he was very strict in reporting; he used to reprimand his students for any negligence in precisely narrating the wordings of narrations.

Hasan Al-Basri Sayings / Quotes: About knowledge

When a man sought knowledge, it would not be long before it could be seen in his humbleness, his sight, upon his tongue and his hands, in his prayer, in his speech and in his disinterest (zuhd) in worldly allurements.

And a man would acquire a portion of knowledge and put it into practice, and it would be better for him than the world and all it contains – if he owned it he would give it in exchange for the hereafter.

~ Hasan Al-Basri

Hasan Al-Basri: What is Iman (Faith)

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – said when asked ‘what is îmân (faith)?’:

It is perseverance (al-sabr) from the things that are forbidden by Allâh the Mighty and Majestic and acceptance.

He was asked, “What is perseverance and acceptance?” He replied,

“al-sabr is to persevere in holding back from what Allâh has forbidden, and [acceptance is] acceptance of what Allâh the Mighty and Majestic has commanded.”

Hasan Basri Quote: About hypocrisy
