Excellence of Fasting (Saum) on 9th & 10th Muharram

Abu Qatadah (RadhiAllahu 'anhu) reported : The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about observing As-Saum ( the fast ) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, “It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year.

[ Muslim ]

Ibn Abbas (RadhiAllahu 'anhu) reported : The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth of Muharram."

[ Muslim ]

Commentary:
Some people think these words stand to mean that `he will observe Saum on the 9th of Muharram only. But this interpretation does not agree with other Ahadith. In order to oppose the Jews, he (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) resolved to observe one more Saum (9th of Muharram) with that of 10th of Muharram and ordained it for the Muslims.

Proof on claimant and oath upon denier

An-Nawawi’s Hadith No.33

On the authority of Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam), said:

"Were people to be given in accordance with their claim, men would claim the fortunes and lives of [other] people, but the onus of proof is on the claimant, and the taking of an oath is incumbent upon him who denies."

Forbidding the evil is part of Iman

An-Nawawi’s Hadith No.34

On the authority of Abu Saeed Al-Khurdari (Radhiallaho anha), who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam), say:

"Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith."
